mass, including joe biden, who, by the way, is the first catholic to be elected as a u.s. vice president. late into the night, crowds just filling the streets of bun ne buenos aires in argentina. the first pope ever chosen from the world's most catholic continent, san francisco. the former argentine cardinal, the first jesuit to hold the title. it was foundnd 1534 becoming a leading force in modernizing the church. the order is known for its missionary and charity work as well as education. that influence can be seen all over the bay area, specially in the south bay where bowl santa claire university and bellarmine college prep are founded on the teaching of the jesuit order. governor brown trained to become a priest before deciding to get

into politics at a press event in san francisco. brown talks to reporters about the new pope saying, quote, i'm glad he is jesuit. new this morning, we are getting details of an earth quote overnight north of santa rosa. a 4.6 hitting just outside of cobb, 40 miles north of santa rosa. it happening just after 2:00 a.m. today, the head of the tsa will be in the hot seat when he appears before congress. controversy all over on a plan to allow passengers to carry small knives on board a flight. a day on capitol hill. the hearing comes just days after a lawmaker introduced a bipartisan bill within the tsa. it is called the no knives act. as it stands, the rule change would allow passengers to carry on certain pocket knives. the caveat is, the blades cannot be longer than 2.36 oinches or more than a half inch wide. they plan to allow an assorted array of sports equipment on board. it is the knife change that has so many people upset, specially alice hogeland. mark bingham stood up to the terrorists and she says the change is a slap in the face. >> to completely turn our back on the possibility that a plane could be hijacked using low-tech items, box cutters and knives, to turn our back on that is to condemn ourselves to repeat history and i don't want that. i don't have any more sons to

give out. the knives do nothing more than distract tsa screen rs, they say, from paying attention to bigger threats like explosives. the backlash is certainly growing. it includes a number of flight attendants and a couple of airline ceos who are speaking out. the head of tsa goes before the transportation committee. at noon today, the policy change is scheduled to take effect on february 25th. >> thank you very much. >> 6:06. time to check the forecast now. with meteorologist, christina loren. >> we are looking so good. good morning, lara and john. good morning to you. take ag live look taking a look at fog settling in. we have a lot of fog. we want to keep that in mind. overall, we are so close to that weekend now. temperatures are going to hold up for the first part of that weekend. i want to point out where the fog is starting to chicken up. fairfield, 2.5 miles of visibility.

only down to .75 in santa rosa. specially around the inner bay and the bay itself. that means the bay bridge will get socked in if it is not already. we are going to check on that with mike. 52 degrees in san jose to start and 46 in gilroy and 56 to start in livermore. we will easily hit the low to mid-60s. we'll round out the day, plenty of 70s a little bit cooler today. comfortable in livermore, 77 degrees. not too hot there. 80 in gilroy. 87 yesterday. 77 degrees for santa teresa. stick around, in my next report, a look at your tahoe ski conditions. what you can expect right here in the bay area tore st. patrick's day. we are going to talk about pollen as well. those numbers, the levels should be creaking down. first, i'll check your drive and see how we are doing there. >> i do see that fog creeping around. i will try to show that in a shot coming up. 101 northbound, the bottom right of your screen with a wider screen. flashing lights. we may have just had a

fender-bender in front of the camera, north 101 at 680. i'll move that camera and check things out. nothing on chp reports just yet. it does show this entire stretch already slow. it may be worse with distractions through that area. another crash farther north, east 237 and slowing on north 680 as well. there is that transition off of calavaris. this is at least a distraction, if not completely blocking at least one of the lanes. we see both of those freeways. keep that in mind as we head out of the south bay. the bottom of the screen, highway 87 starting to show slowing north into downtown. we are looking over towards the east bay as well. 880 southbound starting to show slowing in towards hayward. we will getting a look at the l shots. a good amount of company

westbound. another live look shows you the bay bridge and a backup for the lanes. fast-track, not a problem. we will show you some fog drifting in. it is 6:09 right now. a big-time change on the horizon for drivers navigating around hayward. starting tomorrow, a one-way traffic loop will start taking over downtown affecting every commuter on 580 in hayward heading to the san mateo bridge or fremont. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in ray wahayward. what you need to know today before you drive tomorrow. when you are talking about the so-called hayward loop, a little one-way traffic change that will be taking place here in downtown hayward, takes effect starting around 8:00 tomorrow night. so, basically, it gives you the weekend to work it out. what it is about before the real test on monday morning during the commute. we put this animation together.

i want to throw it up on the tv screen. the loop is going to be encompassing a six-block area in the downtown. traffic headed downtown on jackson and mission will merge on to foothill, which will become one-way in the northbound direction. it will revert back to two-way once the traffic crosses over a street. southbound drivers headed into downtown will be forced into a new one-way traffic pat ter on a street and then mission. mission referring back to two-way on jackson. they have posted their own youtube video describing the changes. we have been looking at some of the comments people made online about these changes. some have been negative. general concern about what it is going to do for businesses down

here. one person saying i don't want to have to deal with one-way traffic. i will just shop elsewhere. that kind of being the main complaint. this is part of a larger 238 improvement project for $100 million. the largest public works project for hayward. this, the hayward loop, being the center piece of the project. it also includes a six-mile stretch from 580 to downtown hayward. check it out over the weekend if you have business here monday morning during the commute to avoid any confusion. reporting live, bob read decdel. a tree just torn to shreds. four firefighters sent to the

new video of a crash that sent four california firefighters to the hospital. their engine making a turn in buena park in orange county when the driver lost control, ran up a median and into a pine tree. four firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what caused that crash. >> it is 6:14 right now. here is a check on the day's top stories. the senate judiciary committee set to approve an assault ban today. senator dianne feinstein says she will need all the help she can get to push this one through both the house and senate. >> one of three men who

kidnapped 26 chowchill la children and their school bus driver has once again been denied parole. james schoenfeld will spend at least three more years in prison for that 1976 kidnapping. following yesterday's emotional announcement, pope francis starting his first full day as lead ter of the catholic church. he will officially be installed in a mass this coming tuesday. 6:15. samsung is giving apple a serious run for its money as the korean company unveils a new phone in new york city. >> that ultracool factor. >> that's right. samsung has done an excellent job of painting the apple iphone as the phone for old people and trend followers. samsung phones as the cooler, younger phone. they will be unveiling its new galaxy s 4 in new york city today. this does appear to have put apple on the defensive in a very rare moment.

apple phil shiler seen here in some video, gave an interview to the wall street journal where he said android phones like the one samsung makes are inferior. this interview is unusual. apple executives don't generally speak to the press except tim cook and he does that rarely. the timing makes it forly obvious what am was trying to accomplish as far as samsung. san francisco attorney, elliot peters, has filed a former accusation of misconduct against the federal prosecutors in the aaron schwartz hacking case. peters, who defended schwartz, says prosecutors withheld evidence. schwartz killed himself shortly before the trial began. we have talked to the past about how some lec tri car companies are struggling, at least those not named tesla.

word that hinrich fisker is stepping down as the chairman of fisker electric cars. it is assumed fisker, the company, will sell itself to a chinese outfit. this is kind of a california company. fisker's headquarters are here in the state. the cars are in europe. they use cars with a battery backup, much like the chevy volt, which isn't selling at all either. the most famous fisker driver that i know is justin bieber. >> is that the shiny one? >> the shiny one that also had some fire trouble. they are just simply not making them at this time. >> i see your point. thank you. >> the bieb knows how to roll. so does christina loren, rolling in some nice weather for us again. beautiful day shaping up. a little bit more comfortable. a little too warm for some people. i heard all about it on my

with you. hopefully, you can get up to tahoe this weekend. let's talk about conditions if you are headed that way. 59 degrees. as we head throughout friday, a little bit warmer in some cities. i think that the south lake tahoe is going to be the place to be as we head throughout this weekend. really comfortable conditions out there. quite a bit of snow above squaw and alpine. get those passes ready to go and hit the slopes. as you know, spring just around the corner now. six days away. that snow is not going tos la the. temperatures, as we head throughout the day today, looking good. we have fog to contend with for your morning drive, specially up in santa rosa. 2.5 miles of visibility. yesterday, you recall how tough the drive was because of the fog. 52, san jose, 46, gilroy. because of that mild start and high pressure still in control, we are going to get close to records. i am forecasting new records in places like santa rosa, 74 was the old record back in 2000. that was set more like the mid to upper 70s up in the north bay

today. more record-breaking warmth headed our way. getting into that all-important st. patrick's day weekend. a little parade happening up in dub lick, little, oh, no. the only little part about it are the leprechauns that will be traveling around. the cars out there. a big parade. 71 degrees on sunday. a beautiful condition for all your outdoor activities. celebrating st. patrick's day in the bay area. pretty green hills. as we head through monday into wednesday, things change. we cool off. they are bringing the showers. i was just noticing, mike, you have a traffic alert out there. >> we do. not officially from chp. i think my eyes and your eyes are good fluff to show you. this is north 101. what we saw was basically the fender-bender that happened right in front of the screen. it looks like much more than a fender that is bent. it looks like a car spun around in this direction. i have seen ambulances and a tow truck. the southbound side, look at that, a fire crew that has

arrived blocking at least that shoulder and maybe your hov lanes. both directions experiencing spectator slowing. the brunt northbound as they are starting to block two lanes, maybe more as the crews have to get around all of this debris. here you go. there you go with the fire coming around the bend. i will update you on facebook and twitter as well as the air. the map shows you the net effect on your commute. we see things bogging down towards 680 on the interchange. right there. it is making things lighter as you are heading north. you are experiencing lighter traffic over there. 680 has cleared with that crash. still has activity and cars are on the shoulder after the earlier crash slowing things counter commute. that is usually very clear. plan for that minor slowing there around the interchange as well. we are looking toward the east bay. we have some slowing. from 580 north and south on 880.

we will hopefully clear some of this. foothill, mission, funneling down towards jackson as well. that bender is where they are instituting the loop hoping to smooth things out. we will track that next week. the bay bridge and toll plaza camera shows you the backup in all lanes. lights turned on a few minutes ago. you can see okay at the toll plaza. you see the low clouds for the east shore freeway. i told you i would show you a look at that. it drifts through the area. we will look at the camera. looking at the headlights coming westbound. this is richmond where you can't see the city lights. your visibility is okay for the time-being. this affects the drive here as well as across the bay. >> today is your chance to pick up some tickets to pick up the documentary about palo alto from jeremy lin. linsanity debuted at sundance in january. it will headline tonight's opening night gala of the campus in san francisco.

"today in the bay's" tracie potts live at the vatican this morning. still seeing those large crowds today out there at st. peter's square? >> reporter: no, but we will see more on tuesday when they have the official installation. 200,000 to 300,000 is what they are expecting. the vatican getting ready for that. the new pope starting his busy day.

we saw him this morning at santa maria, the basilica here in rome dedicated to the virgin mary. he went there and prayed. he went in a siden tran entranc. greeted a few people there while he was there this afternoon. he celebrates mass in the same channel where he was elected. the sistine chapel. moving into tomorrow, a meeting with the cardinals. on saturday, a big press conference with the media here. on sunday, prayers and blessings in the square, something people there have not seen for a few weeks now. then, coming up next week, as i noted, the installation. lots of people expected. we saw the incredible scene last night with thousands rushing to the squa re to see the new pope. >> not to mention easter just around the corner as well,

tracie. thank you very much. certainly, here in the bay area, a special mass will be held in honor of the new pope. san francisco archbishop will lead mass today. that mass will start at 12:10 this afternoon. >> we've an update in breaking news in san jose. the eastern school district confirming a sex offender was, in fact, recently on board a school bus riding with students on a field trip. "today in the bay's" marla tallez just arrived at andrew hills high school. what's the latest? >> reporter: you said it right there, i just got off the phone with public information officer with san jose police. he confirms that the department is investigating the case involving a field trip that happened with students from andrew hill high school. this is in south san jose. as you mentioned, we also received a letter from eastside union high school district superintendent which confirms this as well. now, this field trip happened

last month in february but these details are only coming to light now. officials tell us a registered sex offender did, in fact, ride on the bus with andrew high school students on a field trip to a college in coopertino on february 13th. officer albert morales tells me he believes this person was a guest of an adult. this registered sex offender was in compliance with his sex offender status. he also points out no one was hurt or harmed during the trip. >> i don't believe you can hahe contact with any of the students. he wasn't sitting next to any of the students. i believe he was a guest of an adult. he sat next to the adult and he was in close proximity to the adults and at no time did any kids engage in any conversation nor did he have any contact with any of the kids while on the bus. >> i mentioned the school

district judge released a press release. it reads in part, we have gun the process of reviewing our policies and procedures as well as requiring all district employees to be reeducated in their understanding of our rules in order to ensure that our standards are always upheld. the superintendent in that press release also says he is very disappointed this incident ever occurred. he also acknowledges the families that put their trust within this school district. he says he hopes they will continue to do so. superintendent, chris functik, making himself available for an interview at 8:00 this morning. we will be talking to him then and be able to bring you more information after that. live in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." the man accused of stealing a luxury ride, going out on a joyride and grounding it in pacifica facing a court hearing. leslie gardner being charged with grand theft, receiving stolen property and vandalism. prosecutors say he ripped off the 82-foot darling and

convinced two others to take that ride with him. that boat eventually ran acrowd in lindamar beach. they had to work 24 hours to try and free it from the sand. a preliminary hearing set for monday an urban village built on the grounds of an historic racetrack in san ma mateo distr is about to open its doors. it includes 12 acres of parks and gardens. it is built on the historic bay meadows horse track built in 1984 and closed in 2008. they will dedicate the bay meadows community park this morning. the development officially open tots public on saturday. 6:35. christine lorne is back. we are going to experience a cooloff. you said, you will see records

6:36. want to check on the traffic alert to see if there is any improvement out on the roads in that 15 minutes between the two live views, we have seen crews come up to the area and pick up a lot of debris by hand. one person sweeping up in the head lights. you see that. the remainder of the debris, we have had a couple of tow trucks that have clear. that car that has spun around and ambulances as well. i don't have any details on injuries. they don't look overly serious because they were able to quickly clear this incident to the shoulder. we have one lane blocked. look at the build that's happened over the last few minutes. it shows you the crash is just north of the 680 interchange. the backup toward capital expressway. that's a great cutover if you want to take 87 northbound. more traffic coming up off of ki kirkner and alma. that should improve greatly over

new details this morning in a standoff in upstate new york. we have learned the suspect has been killed in a shootout with police. 64-year-old kirk meyers was wanted for killing four and injuring two more in a shooting spree yesterday. police say after several hours standoff, officers and chi nines went into the building where myers was hiding. he shot a police dog and then an officer shot and killed meyers. also new this morning, one of three men that kidnapped 26 chowchilla children and their school bus driver in a terrifying and bizarre scene has once again been denied parole. prosecutors say james schoenfeld

will spend at least three more years in prison. if you recall, back in 1976, schoenfeld and two other men buried this bus with the kids inside of it in a rock query in livermore looking to grab a $5 million ransom. the kids ended up spending a scary 16 hours inside that bus before they finally escaped. schoenfeld's brother was released on parole last june. >> 6:42 coming up. the san francisco link to a global celebrity hacking scandal. >> also, going around in a circle is a chaotic move in store for east bay drivers. we'll tell you which city is being rerouted.

driving in a circle instead of a straight line downtown, that is the confusing reality facing drivers starting tomorrow in the east bay. "today in the bay's" baob redel joins us live in heywood. good morning, bob. they are calling it the heywood loop for good reason. it is designed to relieve congestion, ease the flow of traffic and make it easier for people to get into the downtown. it is going to take some getting used to get used to. the switchover, you have the weekend to practice the new change of directions. the real test would be during the monday morning commute. we put this graphic together. if you want to take a look at the the tv screen. it is easier to follow along looking at this graphic and animation as i explain. the loop will encompass a six-block area in the downtown area. traffic headed downtown on jackson and mission will merge on the foothill which will now

become one-way in the northbound direction until it crosses eighth street. it goes back to two-way. southbound drivers on foothill headed into the downtown. it will be forced into a new one-way traffic pattern on a street and then mission, which will also be one-way until it crosses or hits jackson and at that point, it will revert back to two-way. if you were to look at this from a helicopter point of view, looking down at this, you could see a loop with the traffic heading in a counter clockwise direction. again, it is supposed to make things easier. the city has posted a youtube video. there are some comments underneath the user section. the handful of comments, some were negative. one person pointing out, hey, you know what, some of my businesses i like to shop at are down in that area. if i have to deal with one-way traffic, i'm not going to frequent that business anymore. that was just one comment that was not necessarily in favor of this. of course, like i said, the true test can be monday morning during the commute as people try to get used to this new arrangement here in downtown

hayward, the hayward loop as they call it. the hayward loop is a crucial part of the 238 corridor improvement project. this is a $100 million project going on for quite some time. it is supposed to improve a six-mile stretch between 580 and downtown hayward. during the switchover, you, expect major disruptions. you might want to practice this overt over the weekend. if you are driving in a straight line or circles, christina loren says it is going to be nice. >> drop that top if you can. oh, yeah. right now, not too cold out there. actually, really mild. spoken to a lot of people within the city. they say they had to sleep with the windows open. 6:47. taking a live look at beautiful san jose. what i can tell you is, it is not going to be as warm as yesterday. we are going to shave off 5-10 degrees on average from the

daytime highs. that's probably a welcome change in livermore where you hit 87 degrees yesterday. starting out nice and mild there at 46. 52 degrees in san jose and 49 degrees to start the day in sunnyville. let me show you what's happening out there. pineapple express is there. it is just not headed our way. it has taken into the pacific northwest. it is going to weaken and start to take a hike as we head throughout the next couple of days. we will see more of an onshore flow and more of the westerly beautiful ocean air pumping on shore throughout the day. temperatures will fall as a result of that. we are also going to see our pollen levels fall. thanks for waking up with us each and every day. we will meet back here tomorrow morning. we will be tracking more of that fog. highs aren't going to be this nice for long. you want to get out there and enjoy them while they last. 77 degrees for livermore and 77 in santa teresa and 80 degrees in gilroy. like i said, a welcome change. you probably need to use your
